Picturesque Mykonos

Bookmark & Share This Tour

It may be one of the smallest Greek Islands, but Mykonos has an overabundance of picturesque scenery, lovely beaches and a cosmopolitan dining and nightlife scene.

Much of the island's history is centered in Mykonos town, also called Chora, where a whitewashed church with four chapels, Panagia Paraportiani (Our Lady of the Postern Gate), is one of several historic landmarks. Others include the Tria Pigadia (Three Wells) and the world-famous windmills of Kato Myli.

Lounging at the fashionable bars in buildings that overhang the shoreline in the town's Little Venice district can yield beautiful sunsets and good people watching.

Mykonos' south shore beaches offers the best views, but it draws bigger crowds – some beaches are family-oriented and some are party beaches for sun-worshipping revelers. The north coast is less developed and not as easily accessible by public transportation, but less crowded and just as beautiful.

Party time never seems to end on Mykonos, from beach parties during the day, to sunset gatherings and the late night club scene in Little Venice and the waterfront.

Visitors will want to try Greek cuisine specialties and the freshly-caught fish that are the hallmark of harborside tavernas here. One favorite, Kounelas, draws local residents as well as travelers.
