When traveling alone, we understand that some travelers do not want to incur the expense of an additional single room supplement. With this in mind, on the majority of their itineraries, Trafalgar offers you the opportunity to purchase these trips on a room-sharing basis. They will accommodate you with a fellow passenger of the same gender on a ‘two-bedded’ basis (non-smoking rooms only). Please note that, regrettably, they cannot guarantee that roommates will be of a similar age group. Even so, it is an enjoyable way to travel and get to make new friends, and a positive way to stretch your vacation budget. If Trafalgar is unable to match you with someone, they will provide a single room at no extra cost. |

Please note: This service does not apply to Trafalgar City Breaks, Greek Island Hopper and Best of Greece vacations, Greek itineraries with Mediterranean cruises, train tours, Egypt, Israel and extra night (pre or post,) accommodations. |

Lady Bug Traveller rated this tour a 4 on 8/15/2011 2:14:58 PM and says:
" Who We Are : I travelled with my boyfriend. We are both in our twenties. This was our second tour with Trafalgar, the first one being Traditional Europe. We found this one to be very different than the first : less time on the bus, more time on boats, less countries, more free time. We also noticed that less things were included, which resulted in a few unexpected expenses : local bus, water, dinners, cable cars, donkeys, etc. Our Tour Director and Group : The tour director was Filippos, a performing artist in his thirties. He is Greek and lives in Athens. We had a different bus driver every time we needed a bus. The group had 20 people who were between the ages of 13 and 60. I found this group to be much younger than the one in Traditional Europe. Half the group was 30 years old or younger and there were a few families. Most travelers were from the United States of America, a few Australians, one New-Zealander, and us from Canada. Technicalities : Our ferry tickets were upgraded to business/VIP two times out of three and our hotel in Mykonos was upgraded to a 5+ stars. We were told that Trafalgar tries to upgrade whenever possible so we were very lucky. The water is only drinkable in Athens. You need to buy bottled water in Santorini and Mykonos (around 50 euros for a small bottle or 1 euro for a large one). As usual with Trafalgar, porterage was included from buses to hotels. However, we had to carry our own suitcases to and from the ferries we took. I found our time could have been better managed, especially on traveling days. On our last tour, we had early starts in order to avoid the big crowds and make the most of our days. This was not the case here. We took later boats and started our excursions later in the morning/afternoon. It was more relaxing, but I feel that we sometimes missed out. We chose which optional excursions we wanted to take as we went along. We only paid them on our last morning in Santorini. Warning : The physical requirements for this tour were higher than expected. There was a lot of walking, especially uphill or upstairs in all the cities we visited. The volcano optional in Santorini was extremely demanding : climbing up a rocky mountain and swimming more than 50 meters in the sea. Overall, this was an amazing trip. Although the pace was slower, we got to see and do a lot of activities. The tour takes you to all the major attractions in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. You get a good overview of what Greece, especially the islands, has to offer. However, this tour was more demanding physically that the one we previously took. There is a lot of walking in extreme heat. Our Tour director did his best to make our trip enjoyable. I recommend it to those who want to experience the islands instead of just visiting them for a few hours on a cruise. We had just finished our Italy Belissimo tour so we only had to transfer to the airport and fly to Athens.
Day 1 - Were picked up by Trafalgar at the airport and transferred to the Park Hotel. We spent the afternoon wandering Athens having lunch at the Plaka. It began to rain so we got a taxi back to the hotel in time for our introduction and drinks at 7.30.
We also had Fillippos as our tour guide with a group of 40. Australians, Canadians and Americans (again no New Zealanders). Fillippos went through the program for Athens and our transfer to Mykonos.
Day 2 - We did not have an early start and met our local tour guide for our tour of the Acropolis. It might have been a better idea to start early as it was very crowded and very hot. After the tour Fillippos offered a walking tour to the Plaka and lunch at a restaurant at our own expense. It was a lovely lunch and we then walked back to the hotel on our own with the rest of the group either staying with Fillippos or heading off to do their own thing.Tonight we had an optional Psiri Dinner. This dinner was excellent and a great introduction to Greek dining and a chance to meet our tour companions.
Day 3 – Athens to Mykonos.
A 4.45am wake up call and a 6.00 am ferry ride to Mykonos. As mentioned above we handled our own luggage at the port from the bus to the ferry and on arrival in Mykonos from the ferry to the bus.We arrived at the Petinos Hotel prior to the rooms being ready so were able to have lunch at a Restaurant on the beach followed by a local bus into Mykonos to meet our local tour guide. The transfer on the local bus was not included and it cost 3.20E return. The tour guide was good and gave lots of information about Mykonos. On arrival back at our hotel we were assigned our rooms and many of the group were unhappy with the rooms and at least two of our group requested changes due to size and cleanliness issues. I am going to advise Trafalgar about this hotel as it was nowhere near the standard of the hotel in Athens and the hotels on our Italy trip.Another point about the Petinos Hotel at Platys Gylos is that the maids do not knock on the door but just come straight in when they wish to clean – bad luck if you happen to be in the shower or just relaxing. I found this to be quite intrusive and I have never come across this in any other hotel. An included dinner at the hotel tonight was only average.
Day 4 – Mykonos
We did not do the tour to Delos but preferred to wander the streets of Mykonos and having a day at leisure.Fillippos offered a dinner in Mykonos town tonight but we stayed at Platys Gylos and enjoyed a dinner at a Restaurant on the beach.
Day 5 – Mykonos
Today we were offered the optional of the Paradise Cruise which we accepted. As we were a large group Fillippos arranged for the boat to dock at Platys Gylos which saved us the trouble of getting the bus into town. Our first stop was Frangias where we enjoyed brunch of bread rolls, olives, wine and/or Ouzo. The weather was warm so swimming and snorkelling were also enjoyed (BYO snorkelling gear).Back on the boat and our next stop was for lunch at Kalafatis. This was a great lunch of chicken, the obligatory Greek salad, and potatoes. Wine was also included. After lunch we boarded the boat for our last stop at Super Paradise Beach. Some enjoyed swimming or relaxing on the beach whilst others had a drink at the bar.
Day 6 – Mykonos to Santorini
Our luggage was collected from our rooms and placed on the bus but once again we are responsible for the transfer of our luggage to the ferry. Fillippos suggested that we pay 2E per piece of luggage to the porters on the ferry so that all our luggage would be placed together and they would take the luggage off the ferry. We then transferred the luggage from the port to the bus and had our trip up the mountain and on to the El Greco Hotel. Wow, what a difference from Mykonos. This is a great hotel and was exactly what we were expecting of hotels on the Greek Islands. This afternoon we had an orientation walk of Fira which was followed by a highlight dinner at the hotel. Fira is only a 10 minute walk from the Hotel. The highlight dinner was a buffet dinner and there was more than 1 group at the hotel. The food was OK but I am not a fan of buffet dinners.
Day 7 – Santorini
Today we were offered the optional of the Island Tour. We did not take this tour, instead we hired a car and drove ourselves around the Island stopping at all the points which were included on the island tour – our difference was that we drive right up to the highest point of the island, and werer able to stop and walk down to Red Beach for a swim. Those that took the Island Tour said that they enjoyed it.Fillippos again offered for those who wished to go for dinner in Fira at their own expense. As we had enjoyed a late lunch we walked into Fira and had our own dinner. There are lots of lovely restaurants ranging in price.
Day 8 – Santorini
Today we were offered the Volcano and Caldera Cruise – we opted not to take this. We walked into Fira and got the cable car down to the port and saw those who were doing the cruise off. We were quite surprised that Fillippos was not taking the group and they did not have a tour guide for this optional. We opted not to take the donkey back up the hill but returned in the cable car.We spent the morning wandering the streets and the afternoon by the pool. Those that took the cruise enjoyed it.Tonight was the optional to Oia and Sunset Dinner. We had a lovely dinner and unfortunately the sunset was not that good due to haze.
Day 9 – Santorini to Athens.
Our ferry was not departing Santorini till 5.00 so we had most of the day to enjoy our last day on Santorini. We had to book out of the hotel by 12.00 so we made sure we had our bathers etc. In our hand luggage. We left the hotel and drove back down the cliffs to the port. We had been at the port for approx. 10 mins when Fillippos advised us that the ferry had been delayed by 2 hours. We decided to see if we could upgrade our ferry tickets so that we would be more comfortable and perhaps nap as this delay meant that we would not get into Athens until midnight. On speaking to the agents at the ferry office we found out that the ferry had in fact been cancelled due to bad weather. We approached Fillippos and told him this and asked if Trafalgar had a plan B as there were no other ferries for the day and 90% of the group were departing Athens the next day. Some of our group had a 2.00am transfer to the airport. He said he would know more in 20 mins. Approx. ¾ hr later he informed us that Trafalgar had organised a Charter Flight to Athens (this in fact was incorrect as the ferry company organised the charter not Trafalgar). As we had some time before we had to be at the airport a wine tasting was organised. At the winery we organised our own group photo as this had not been done.We arrived at the Airport to be told to form a queue in front of the booking agents. Two hours later and after the arrival of the rest of the people who had been booked on the ferry they began to book us onto the flight – what absolute chaos – it was only after our complaints that we had been standing there for over two hours that they began to book us in before those who had just arrived. We eventually arrived back in Athens at mid-night and transferred to the Park Hotel – I felt very sorry for those who had the early transfers back to the airport. They only really had enough time to gather the luggage they had left at the hotel and repack their bags.
Day 10 – Departure Day.We had our transfer at 11.00 am for our flight from Athens to London. Hooray on booking in we found that our upgrades from London to Melbourne had been confirmed – First class.
Hotels – rated * - *****
Athens - Park Hotel ***1/2 – fabulous view of the Acropolis from the 8th floor. Rooms seem to vary – our first room was quite small and the last room much bigger.
Mykonos - Petinos Hotel, Platys Gylos - * . We were very disappointed in this hotel and believe it should be removed from Trafalgars Hotels. I have emailed Trafalgar separately regarding this.
Santorini - El Greco Hotel **** - Lovely hotel, great pools, free wi-fi in the lobby and the food at the pool bar was terrific.
Optionals and Cost:
Athens – Walking tour and dinner In Psiri – 49E. Great introduction to Greek dining.
Mykonos -Ancient Delos – 44E. We did not take this optional.
Paradise Cruise – 64E – Very enjoyable and relaxing – great way to see the other beaches of Mykonos.
Santorini – Island Tour – 28E – We did not take this optional
Volcano & Caldera Cruise – We did not take this optional but those that did enjoyed it.
Oia & Sunset Dinner – 35E – Good food and company . It was disappointing as this was an optional as not all took this so were not able to have a farewell dinner. A suggestion to Trafalgar would be to have this as the highlight dinner and give the highlight dinner at the hotel a miss.
